Nawabi Paneer | Nut-free

Nawabi Paneer is a special side dish from Hyderabad. It is creamy, rich and flavorful and made with milk, Paneer, Cashews, onions and some spices. As this is a nut free recipe, I have not used cashews in it. I substituted cashew cream with heavy cream to give it a creamy and rich flavor. It can be served in parties with Naan, Kulcha or any kind of Indian flatbread.

  • 100 gms Paneer (cut into small cubes)
  • 1 cup Onion (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp Kasoori Methi/Dried fenugreek leaves
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • Cilantro for garnishing
  • 1/2 cup Yogurt
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 2 tbsp Heavy cream (optional)
  • 2-3 tsp oil
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • 1 inch cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds / jeera
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Salt to taste

Method:

Fry Paneer in a pan and keep them aside. This is an optional step.
Blend onions to smooth paste. keep aside.

In a large kadai, heat oil. Add cumin seeds, bay leaf , cinnamon, sauté  until spices turn aromatic.

Add prepared onion paste and stir well.

Cook on medium flame, until the raw flavour disappears and oil separates from sides and most of the water evaporates.

Keep the flame on low add cup yogurt and stir continuously.

Add cream, milk and stir adjusting consistency using water as  required.

Add salt and garlic powder mix well.

Add Kasoori methi and mix it well.

Add fried paneer cubes, and Simmer for 5 mintues or until the flavour absorb completely.

Garnish Nawabi Paneer with Chopped Cilantro. Serve this dish with Naan, Kulcha, Parathas Or Rotis.
Notes:
1. Add cashews to the blender along with onions.
2.For Vegans, You can substitute Paneer with tofu cubes and use coconut milk and cashew cream instead of heavy cream, yogurt and milk.
