Sabudana Thalipeeth

Sabudana thalipeeth is a breakfast dish made with soaked tapioca pearls/sago, boiled and mashed potatoes along with some spices. See notes if you are making this recipe for fasting/vrat.

 Ingredients:

1 cup Sabudana/Tapioca pearls

3 medium sized boiled potatoes

1 green chili, finely chopped

1/4 cup cilantro

1 tsp cumin seeds

1/2 tsp grated ginger

Salt to taste

1 tsp Garam Masala

1/3 cup roasted coarsely ground peanuts

Method:

  • Wash Tapioca pearls and soak them overnight in water just enough to cover them. The pearls will get softer the next day.
  • In a large mixing bowl, Add boiled and mashed potatoes and tapioca pearls.
  • Add salt, cumin ginger, chopped green chili, ground peanut powder, Garam Masala and cilantro in it and mix it together to combine into a stiff dough. Add a tablespoon water if the dough is dry.
  •  Keep the dough covered for 15 mins. Divide the dough into equal portions. Take a portion of the dough and place it on a greased parchment paper. You can use a large ziplock bag or a aluminum foil.
  • Press the portion of the dough into a flat circle of 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Heat the cast iron pan on medium heat. Drizzle some oil on pan. Place the rolled out portion of the thalipeeth on the cast iron pan and carefully remove the parchment paper from top.
  • Drizzle a teaspoon of more oil on the top side and let it cook for 2-3 mins. Check if the underside of the thalipeeth is golden brown. If it is, then flip it on the other side and cook for another 2-3 mins or it’s browned.
  • Take the thalipeeth out from the pan. Similarly prepare the other thalipeeth and serve warm along with peanut cilantro chutney.

For peanut yogurt chutney

1/4 roasted peanuts

1/2 inch ginger

1 green chili

Salt to taste

1/2 cup plain yogurt

1/4 cup cilantro

Grind all the ingredients together in a chutney blender jar.

Notes:

This dish can also be made for fasting or Vrat during Navratri festival. If making this as a vrat recipe, do not use Garam Masala in it. Also instead of regular salt, you can use Sendha Namak.
